The Company
Location
The Company BIOESCARGOT sarl has been formed late year 2000.
The know-how of the Company is based on a vocational training had in September 2000 by Doctor G. Avagnina, president of the Italian Association of Edible Snails Farming and of the National Institute of Snails Farming in Cherasco (Italy).
The Company has been registered to the GREFFE du tribunal de Commerce de Toulouse (N° de Registre du Commerce 4333 608 940, N° de Gestion 2000 B 2385).
The farming is located in LA PLAINE DU LAURAY - 31700 DAUX (France) on a land of 96a fenced in with a suitable farming protection against rats and moles.
Another land of 62a is reserved to the cultivation of sunflowers and other greens as extra feeding for the snails.
Activity
The main activity of BIOESCARGOT is the farming in open air of snails Petit Gris (Helix Aspersa Muller) type.
It is based mainly on the agricultural exploitation of lands on which the most desirable plants are seeded, i.e.: beets, rapes, chicory, Hungarian sprout and sunflowers cultivated by biological means (no chemical compounds added to help growth and plants preservation).
Process
The farming consists in the introduction of brooder snails (Helix Aspersa Muller), supplied and certified by the National Institute of Snails Farming of Cherasco (Italy), in special reproduction pens, made of specific patented nets with dimensions 45m x 3.5m, where greens are cultivated.
About two months from the birth, the baby snails are moved to special pens, similar to the previous ones, where they will find greens more suitable for fattening.
Product availability
Taking into account the snails development cycle and the farming setting up completion, production will achieve its normal condition between June 2002 and November 2002.
In 2001 about 300 Kg of snails (brooding snails) are supposed to be sold while about 10 tons are supposed to be sold in 2002. This will be the normal product quantity available every year for the land extension assigned to the farming.
Future plans
To get contiguous lands within 2005 (about additional 5 ha) to increase Petits Gris production and to start farming of Bourgogne (Grand Blanc) snails type.
